In 2017, at the age of 36, Tim Kimmel discovered that what doctors had thought was stubborn pneumonia was actually stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer—a shock, as he had never smoked and was otherwise considered healthy. Tim had 15 good months on a newly approved lung cancer treatment. But when the disease advanced again, only experimental clinical trials and off-label drugs remained as options for him. In June of 2020, Tim passed away at home with his family by his side.
Lung cancer research and advocacy were very important to Tim. His family and friends hope to continue this in his memory through the Kimmel Klassic and The Tim Kimmel Family Fund for Lung Cancer Research at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center.
